Independent Reading Assignment

Your assignment is to read one outside novel (minimum 100 pages) per nine weeks.  This can be either fiction or non, and must not be something you have either previously read or are reading for another class.  The purpose of this assignment is simply reading for the sake of enjoying reading.  Please choose something that is of interest to you rather than what is popular or what you think will be the most impressive.

A report including the following elements in this format may be turned in at any point prior to one week before midterms/finals (submissions beyond this deadline may not be accepted):

Title

Author

Setting

What is the time and place represented in this work?  What is the significance?

Characters

List all main characters, their overall characteristics, and if they are a static character, a dynamic character (how did they change?), or a stock character (to what purpose?).

Conflict

What is the problem or main theme of the work?

Main Events

Discuss major moments in the work, why they were important, and what was the effect?

Climax

What is the highest point of action in the story and what is the result?

Conclusion

What is the resolution of the story?  What becomes of the main characters or their conflict?  Are there any unresolved issues?

Your Opinion

Why did you choose this book to begin with?  Did you, or did you not like this book (why or why not)?  Would you recommend this book to a friend (why or why not)?

Please turn in typed, where possible, in MLA format, and relatively free of major spelling or grammatical errors.  This will be worth a major test grade.

See me if you need suggestions.
